Question

How to change the default temporary-file directory used for JViews applications?

Answer

JViews applications such as Designer can use scratch storage.
This storage is based on the default temporary-file directory set for JAVA.

  • On UNIX systems, the default value is typically "/tmp" or "/var/tmp".
  • On Microsoft Windows systems, it is typically "C:WINNTTEMP" or the default temporary-directory from the user profile "C:Documents and SettingsLocal SettingsTemp".

To specify a new value for this directory, you need to add the java.io.tmpdir option when the Java Virtual Machine is invoked. For example:

java -Djava.io.tmpdir=C:MY_TEMP_JAVA ...

Please note that programmatic changes to this property are not guaranteed to have any effect upon the temporary directory used by this method.
