Question
How can I get latitude and longitude coordinates given a city name or postal code?
Answer
Many mapping applications have location data in the form of city names or
postal codes. To position objects on a map requires latitude and longitude
coordinates. There are several sources of data that list these coordinates by
place name or by postal code. A few are listed below.
Free sources are
often out of date. Postal code areas change regularly. If you need precise
data, you should consider one of the commercial offerings.
- FREE - US 3-digit zip codes - Lat/long values for the first three digits of US zip codes.Directions Magazine.
- COMMERCIAL - US & Canada - Lat/long values by postal code, city name, and more.Zip Code Download.
- COMMERCIAL - US, Canada, Mexico - Lat/long values by postal code: GreatData.com.
